We devote a lot of time and effort to our health, to our relationships, to our leisure activities.
Why do we devote so little time to establishing the correct Careers and to finding the right Jobs?
Partly it's because it requires a lot of thought and people would always rather DO things than THINK about things. Partly it's because people are afraid to fail. Being turned down for a job is a nasty rejection. But mostly it's because we don't often have to look for a job and so we are not experienced and skilled at doing so.
STUDY THE CAREER & JOB PACKAGE. IT COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
Follow these seventeen rules for a successful career
Your life is more important than your career. But what is life without a career?
You are always on your own, even in a big company. Companies don't have feelings. The bonds in a company may be strong but they are transient. It's your career take charge of it.
Rule 1: Don't expect a company to take care of you.
Some jobs you can do; some you can't. You have special gifts that fit you for certain jobs and disqualify you for others.
Rule 2: Take time to assess your skills, temperament and aptitude.
The PASDAQ Review in THE CAREER AND JOB PACKAGE helps you to do this. Your job is short-term. It can end anytime, even if you own the company. Imagine you are 'unemployed' every day. That way you'll plan what you're going to do next. Always be ready with "Plan B".
Rule 3: Don't take your present career for granted.
People skills are more important than technical skills. Even in technical jobs, you have to deal with other people. Some people are EA (Emotionally Autistic). How good is your ability to handle yourself and other people (Emotional Intelligence)?
Rule 4: The average performer who is easy to work with lasts longer in his job.
Your achievements will determine your marketability. Your results are what count. So make sure you're contributing something substantial and measurable every day. And make sure you keep a record of your results. The 'Running CV' is a vital part of your equipment. How to present your CV is another vital part in THE CAREER AND JOB PACKAGE.
Rule 5: You are the book; your CV is the cover
If you lose your job, the marketing for your new job is already well advanced. Your reputation, results, accomplishments, people skills, contributions, friendships are all a matter of record. If you've been a contributor, if you've been kind to others and easy-to-work-with, you'll be in better demand. If not, you won't.
Rule 6: You create your own network; nobody does it for you.
Changing industries or functions is difficult. The bigger the change, the more difficult it will be. Choose your career path carefully.
Rule 7: "The best way to predict the future is to plan it".
Planning your career is an intrinsic part of THE CAREER AND JOB PACKAGE. If you're fired or laid off, don't fight with or sue your former employer. Why didn't you see it coming? If you did see it coming, why you didn't do something about it? Understand your contribution to the problem.
Rule 8: Then go forward to a new, better life for yourself.
Don't stay in a job you hate.
Rule 9: Being unhappy at work can literally kill you.
Success is difficult.
Rule 10: Accept that to be successful you must work hard at it.
There's a special place for everyone. You can create the kind of future you want.
Rule 11: Knowing what you want is the hard bit.
THE CAREER AND JOB PACKAGE gets to the heart of the matter.
Rule 12: She or he who finds a niche is already well on the road to success.
The workplace is fun and challenging. It can also be cruel and heartless. It rewards effort and planning, but tends to punish indifference and lack of preparation.
Rule 13: Those who don't manage their careers end up in painful, dead-end jobs and lifestyles.
You are in full control of your own future. No one can deny you a happy life if you decide to plan it and work for it.
Rule 14: No one can stop you from becoming successful, but yourself.
It's never too late for a start over.
Rule 15: Today is the day to start that New Beginning.
Make winners a part of your network. Success is infectious.
Rule 16: "If you keep doing what you¡¯ve always done, you¡¯ll get what you've always got"
Always remain optimistic. Success begins with self-belief. Practice it.
Rule 17: We are what we eat; we become what we think

"After the PASDAQ Review, I have a better idea what I shall look for when I am searching for jobs now"
LWH, Project Engineer
"I GOT THE JOB AS DIRECTOR OF SALES...A HUGE HUG and heartfelt gratitude"
MC (Job applicant)
"John, you have been very supportive and I am really grateful for that. Thank you."
EF, Finance Manager
"I appreciate your prompt response. I'm getting very pleased with myself for joining."
EC (Fund Manager)
"Brilliant! A BIG thank you. I really appreciate your comments."
RW (Mentee)
"I really don't know how to thank you except to say once again, thank you - from the bottom of my heart."
SN (Legal Counsel)
"The modules enabled me to learn a lot more about myself, made me more confident and highlighted how I could approach an organization that I might be interested in. (The PASDAQ Review) has helped me to identify my fears, how to view networking objectively and opened my eyes to new possibilities such as running my own business. The package is not difficult but takes some time and effort on the part of the Mentee. I think however that it is well worth the effort and not difficult for anyone who truly wish to benefit from the package."
SL (Communications expert)
"You're the sunshine that showered warmth onto me, keeping me growing."
PT (Entrepreneur and Business Innovator)
"Thanks for your valued advice. You are wonderful. Made my day. Keep your thoughts coming. They are so refreshing and motivational too."
VDT (PA to CEO)
"If not for your help this (last) 6 months, I doubt I could have gotten the job."
RT (Job applicant)
"With your help I straightened out my career plans. I know where I am going."
SdeM (Marketing Manager)
"You touched my life"
PF (Department Manager)
"I learned all of this and more from you John, and just wanted to say thank you. I was very lucky indeed to have had an example such as yours from which to learn. I will forever be grateful."
SF (President of a large Canadian Corporation)
"Through you I learned what it means to treat people well and the loyalty that results. I learned to trust my senior people and expect the most from them. I find, like you, I believe, that people live up to their expectations. I learned that to be generous to an employee pays off very well in the end (the alternative is an utter disaster). I learned the power that the CEO's personality brings to the culture of an organisation. I learned to identify and focus on the key issues facing the business, leaving aside the myriad small and obfuscating issues that can easily consume one's day. I can say in all honesty that I wouldn't have landed this role without the tremendous help of John. He gave me a new lease of corporate life and I will always be grateful."

C1 PASDAQ
"This was an excellent package. This really gave me the chance to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses. Until this point I really believed that I wanted to work for myself. I began to explore my reasons for this and it soon became apparent that this is what I thought I would have to do given my age and prior experience. This package made me realise that I do have qualities and skills that I can take to another employer. Suddenly I had choices. It also made me realise that I do not necessarily want to work on my own. It was the isolation that I disliked most at my previous organisation."
D1 Future Financial Needs
"This package provided a useful (scary) insight into my future financial needs. I quickly realised that I have very little time in which to amass £ 900k (a bit short of the £1m you kept mentioning John). This fact concentrated my mind and made me determined to apply for posts that would give me a realistic income. It also made me reflect very seriously on my worth when planning my career. I would not sell myself short again to a potential employer."
E1 Career Plan
"This package again made me think about what I wanted from life. It made me plan and take actions based on what I wanted now and in the future. This was extremely useful when I went for interviews. It gave me control. I was seeing if I wanted to join them. If they were offering the terms and conditions that would satisfy me now and in the years to come. I was no longer being a passive spectator of my own life.
This helped me enormously at interview stage. I had 3 interviews and all 3 offered me a job/associate status. I felt confident. My approach was clear, professional, positive. 3 people told me that I had interviewed very well. I think this was because I had a clear idea of what I wanted and a very good CV that provided a wonderful introduction to me. The next package also helped tremendously."
I1 Prepare for and handle the interview
"Again I think this preparation helped me feel confident and in control. Being relaxed I felt better able to answer the questions. I was clear, I didn't get flustered and I was totally myself."
J1 Negotiate your salary and terms
"All the packages were good but this one was definitely the one that helped me achieve the package I wanted. The company I'm joining tried to take some salary (£11k) into performance related pay. I resisted and I was willing to walk away. I sat with my exercise sheet in front of me with the 2 positions 'would like' and 'must get' completed for this job. I followed your advice John and I got the £10k commuted back into salary. I wanted an extra £1k on my car allowance. In the end they also commuted this to my salary. Performance related pay is now £15k instead of £21k so the total package is still higher than first discussed."

"Although my correspondence with you is infrequent, my reading of your column in AsiaOne is regular. I have recently been promoted to the position of manager for the engineering department that I have been serving in. I wanted to share this with you because your column has help me to see those I work with as people, not just resources. I believe that regular
Reading your column has helped me to become a better and more successful person.
Thank you.
Sincerely,"
Dave C******, Manager, Applications Engineering
"And John... would just like to state here that I am really grateful for your objective and insightful comments and support when I was down in the dumps."
