Hi John. What great examples of modern existential paradoxes. Just as we teach in leadership programs (but yours are more important), the challenges are: knowing when we must choose one solution over the other and, if we believe both solutions can be achieved, then how.

No comment but meditation, commitment and hope as well as faith needed all bound together with love. As they say: "change the world but change your self first".

And alongside this what they call the Arab Spring. Democracy not yet outmoded but it seems to be hand in glove with Capitalism (market forces etc!). I am told that if no one shop lifetd prices could come down by 20 percent and if paid taxes or did not cheat the benefit system and no one stole from the NHS mush would be saved. How do we stop greed, theft and immorality? If you have an answer patent it. Until then set the example.

Excellent points. I would like to hear from others who have both similar and differing points of view. It is a tricky subject! Thank you.

Good one John and timely reminder esp for parents/ mothers/grand-parents/teachers/company leaders-managers.
I strongly believe that children must be personally attended to by their maternal parents from birth 80% of the time so that they can impart the correct life-values to their children.
Parents should refrain and allow minimal time for the domestic-helper to tend to their children.
To facilitate this employers must adopt a family-friendly attitude to staff with infants and young children.
The recent promotion on awareness for work-life balance is a step in the right direction for our society to help our young to grow stronger human roots/value in their lives.
Once the children are off to school/college, then grow up and work,it is for the teachers and company-leaders to help shape and grow their roots-their life-value system, the will form a truely humanistic Singapore society.
Let's in our own way, resolve to contribute and work towards making this happen.

Regards.

A Royal Navy officer's training has a tangible element called "Officerlike Qualities", known of course as "Oily Qs". These are constantly brought to mind both for leadership and general enthusiasm. Schools and colleges would do well to introduce something similar which currently seems to be lacking in the work recruiting force.

Beautiful analogy. If you think to much earlier when trees are saplings, there is also the importance of planting them in deep to let them grow deep roots and not to plant them shallow as we will not be doing them a favour. So it is that parents should throw their kids into the deep ends at times so that thy can learn from the challenges and grow deep roots too. Of course, this tough love is done always watching at the side and providing some sticks to help prop them up to grow straight as well.
