Handle Yourself and Other People
Emotional (and Social) Intelligence is more important than all the honours degrees in the world. We are constantly judged for it yet we seldom apply it in practice.
Fortunately, unlike IQ, emotional intelligence can keep growing–it continues to develop with life’s experiences. Understanding and raising your emotional intelligence is essential to your success at work and in life.
Daniel Goleman, author of The New York Times bestseller Emotional Intelligence defines it as a set of skills, including control of one’s impulses, self-motivation, empathy and social competence in interpersonal relationships. In the workplace, it is a set of skills that distinguish how people manage feelings, interact, and communicate. In leadership, it involves the four domains of EI: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.
- Do your relationships with your boss and senior management need improving?
- Do you find your colleagues political and hard to deal with?
- Do you find it difficult to present to a roomful of people without feeling self-conscious?
- Do you dread ‘prospecting’ and ‘cold calls’?
- Is a lack of social skills holding you back in your career and personal life?
- Are you shy, awkward and tongue tied at important functions and gatherings?
- Do you know how to ask questions and get people interested in you?
If any of these questions strike a chord with you, a Terrific Mentor will work alongside you to overcome the top three challenges presented by your boss, co-worker or by being in a particular social setting.
Guided by your Terrific Mentor, you will set the agenda for each session. This will be scheduled at least once a month at the convenience of both you and your Terrific Mentor. Where course work is assigned, you will be expected to complete it within a mutually agreed timeframe.
