‘I didn’t have time to…’

How often do we hear this excuse from someone who has not done something they said they would do? It is often regarded as a totally legitimate reason for failure.

People have frightening rituals (often described as ‘procedures’) imposed on them. Examining how productive these rituals are demonstrates that they are a waste of time. The most destructive of these rituals is ‘meetings’.

How much control do you have over your time? Much more than you think.

You can’t refuse to see the boss; you must attend to customers; you have to deal with Authority. Within these constraints you can choose what you do with your time and how you organise it.

Some people are better organised than others. Some need help in getting their act together. In either case you can increase your productivity by at least 50% if you are methodical, if you choose your priorities sensibly and if you apply a modicum of discipline to your life.

This Time Management Course sets you a series of exercises, one at a time. You do them in your own home, at your own pace. After each exercise you will receive comments on the work you have done from me.

The exact number of exercises will depend on the progress you make. Each person has some abilities and some weaknesses. As a minimum you will do fifteen exercises. You may be asked to do as many as twenty-five.

The subjects covered are:

  • What are your priorities (a) in life (b) at work?
  • How do you determine what you are going to do first each day?
  • How do you cope with multiple functions?
  • Can you do several things at the same time?
  • Must you concentrate on one thing?
  • What is the secret of ‘flow’?
  • What areas do you regard as a waste of your time?
  • Who do you regard as the people who waste your time, and how do they do so?
  • How good are you at being punctual?
  • Do you deliver things you have promised others on time, late or not at all?
  • How reliable are you?
  • What spurs you to do things on time?
  • What things would you rather put off?
  • In your last few appraisals at work how have you been rated for delivering on time? being dependable? for achieving the targets expected of you?

“I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date”
